"The Nude"
Opening receptions Thursday July 16th 5-9pm
Thursdays July 2nd - Sunday July 26th
Artists interpret and celebrate the human body in July at Gallery Z, in assorted media including drawings, paintings, photography, limited edition prints and sculpture.
Depicting the nude figure is a long-established recognized genre in Western art. Dating from the carved and sculpted female fertility deities of antiquity, the nude became a centerpiece of artistic representation in Ancient Greece, glorifying the idealized male figure in athletic competitions during religious festivities, and a focal point of Renaissance painting and sculpture. The tradition persisted from the seventeenth century throughout the present day. Famous artists in this genre include Michelangelo, with his gleaming sculptures and exceptionally detailed paintings, anatomical drawings and studies; sculptors Donatello and Rodin; Renaissance painters glorifying voluptuous female figures, often in luxuriating recline: Titian, Botticelli, Rubens, Velazquez, Rembrandt; Manet and Courbet during the 1800s; and the early 20th century’s Klimt, Schiele, Modigliani, Picasso and Matisse. Varying representations of “The Nude” will be on exhibit in art works culled from amongst 45 of contemporary artists & over 85 pieces of original fine art represented by Gallery Z |
