Midge Stark Bovino is a native of Granby, CT and was educated in the local school system, Midge went on to attend and graduate from the Art Institute of Boston, majoring in Illustration.
She immediately went to work for Hamilton Standard in Windsor Locks CT ( a division of United Technology) in their publication's department as a technical illustrator. She then went on to Scheafer Baton in Pittsfield, MA as a graphic designer. After two years with Scheafer Baton she went to work for Sunshine Art Studios in Springfield, MA as a staff artist. In short time she was promoted to Art Director, where she expanded her portfolio to include numerous published greeting cards and paper products.
In 1995 Midge went on her own as a freelance artist and illustrator. Her clients now include Rossi Metal Sculpture, For the Moment Poetry, Sullivan Paper Company, to name a few and currently illustrating a book.
In December of 2000 Midge relocated toWesterly, RI, where she decided to focus on her own style of acrylics and watercolors and move away from the greeting cards and design work she did for others. Her work was received with much enthusiasm from the community and the downtown merchants. She has exhibited at the Granite Theater, Perks and Corks Cafe and at MB Gallery, all located in RI. Currently she is represented by Gallery Z in Providence, RI, Ariana Gallery in Royal Oak, MI and Tidwell Gallery in Charleston, SC. Up coming shows in 2004 are at; Gallery Z, Providence, RI and The North Charleston Cultural Center, North Charleston, SC.
Some of her commissions are hanging in Bay State Medical Center, Springfield, MA and Children's Hospital, Boston, MA. Her images can also be seen on the tabletops of Prime Time Cafe, Pawcatuck, CT.
Recently, Midge has moved to the Charleston, SC area where she is painting and illustrating from her home. She is hopeful that the South Carolinians will receive her work with the same enthusiasm.
Midge Stark Bovino About my work
I have many styles but the style that is truly my own, is the figurative work that comes from my imagination. I use no models for my paintings, they come purely out of my head on to the canvas. I fear that if I start using models, my people will start looking to real. I want them to look unreal with out looking cartoonish.
I love to observe people doing average every day things, mostly during their leisure time. I find humor in almost everything and I think people take them selves all to seriously. Most people can identify with my work and it gives them permission to laugh at them selves.
So, if someone smiles or gives a comment "that reminds me of myself and gets a chuckle, I feel the painting was a success.
