At GALLERY Z: Selected Works by painters Kevork Mourad and Harut Aghajanian, Thurs., Jan. 7th - Sat., Feb. 6th, 2016. Opening Reception Thursday, Jan. 21st, 5-9PM.
Gallery Z 2016 - Fifteen years - over 160 exhibits - eleven exhibits and thirty-four+ artists planned for 2016 - and a stable of around 300 artists - Gallery Z celebrates 2016 . Gallery Z, thrilled to commemorate its fifteenth anniversary this January 2016, will be featuring two international painters of Armenian heritage. World-renowned painter Kevork Mourad was born in 1970 in Syria. Of Armenian origin, he received his MFA from the Yerevan Institute of Fine Arts in Armenia. He has recently exhibited at Galerie Claude Lemand in Paris, and at the Art Paris Art Fair in 2015. He has had solo exhibitions at the Contemporary Art Platform in Kuwait, 2014, previously at Gallery Z, at JK Gallery, Los Angeles, the Rafia Gallery, Damascus, Syria, which represents him in the Middle East, and at the Courtyard Gallery in Dubai (2010). Five of his pieces are in the permanent collection on the 70th floor of the Bourj Khalife in Dubai. Kevork has twice had work auctioned at Christie's Dubai. He has exhibited and painted live in "Art Moment 2014", in Budapest, Hungary. The Map of Future Movements, a digital piece, was part of a touring group exhibition in Jerusalem and Ramallah, and was included in the 2010 Liverpool Biennial. Six of his pieces are in permanent residency at the Gyumri Museum in Armenia, and several more at the Armenian Library and Museum of America in Watertown, Massachusetts. Group shows include the NYU Small Works Gallery in both 2005 and 2007. |
Kevork has also perfected a technique of spontaneous painting, during which he shares the stage with many world class musicians including Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble, of which he is a member as a visual and teaching artist. He has co-produced and directed two plays that have toured and been performed internationally, and has created the animation for an opera by Lembit Beecher, I Have No Stories to Tell You, commissioned by Opera Philadelphia. Mourad has also designed stop-motion animation for Manuel De Falla's Master Peter's Puppet Show, which he performed with the Knights at Tanglewood in July 2015 to great acclaim. Kevork Mourad lives in New York City and maintains a studio in Brooklyn, when he is not traveling internationally.
Harut Aghajanian is an Armenian artist born in Iran in 1956. He studied at Terlemezian College art school in Yerevan from 1984 to 1987; in 2002 he was awarded a prize by the Gemmayse Development Association ( ADG). His paintings have been exhibited in the Beirut, Lebanon, art galleries Bronte and Zeina Sultan, and in Boston. Many of his works are in private collections in the United States and several European countries. This exhibit includes a selection of beautifully balanced exquisite figurative works on paper in both black and white and soft wash tones. In some, animal heads emerge tucked amongst finely drawn huddled human figures.
In addition, Gallery Z displays an ever-changing extensive and diverse selection in salon style of original Fine Art works (paintings, photographs, drawings, mixed media, glass, sculptures, assemblages, etchings, lithographs) from Gallery Z's deep stable of over 300 Fine Artists, locally, nationally and internationally renowned, along with fine ceramics and pottery, jewelry and Armenian and international handicrafts. The adjacent "Italy" room expands the vibrant local Federal Hill Italian cultural atmosphere with "Dreamy Venice", filled with luminous handmade small Murano glass gifts (paperweights, ornaments, vessels, perfume bottles) and Murano glass jewelry (pendants, necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings, watches, hair clips), all personally chosen and imported from Venice by Gallery Associate Linda Kamajian in a sparkling rainbow of colors. These are set amidst Fine Art paintings and photographs related to Italy or by some of Gallery Z's established Italian-American Fine Artists.

Bill Killen creates oil paintings in extreme realism, a technique using many thin transparent layers of paint on wood or canvas. His most popular and most terrifying body of work "The Zombie Horde" will be featured at Gallery Z this month. (JUST KEEP TELLING YOURSELF.... They are just paintings.... They are just paintings...) He earned his BFA from Rhode Island School of Design and continued studying drawing and painting at the Art Students League of New York. Killen has exhibited throughout New York and Rhode Island, at galleries such as AS220 and the RISD Alumni Shows in Providence and the Bottle Neck Gallery in NYC.
Brian O'Malley pursues conceptual, narrative style paintings fusing landscape and figure. He states "These pictures become more real than reality when I am at work. I have to enter into them and experience the space in order to capture the 'suspension of disbelief.' In this way, movement, memory and space all coexist." He has a BFA from the University of Rhode Island, MFA from the University of Miami, and took continuing education courses at Massachusetts College of Art. Brian currently teaches at the University of Rhode Island as an adjunct professor. He has shown extensively in the New England area in numerous group shows at the Boston Center for the Arts, University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College, the Space at Alice and Gallery Z, among others.

I paint the ugly and disturbing, mask-like figures because I use them as metaphor to analyze the shadow that lies in every society's sub-conscious, that part of the psyche that craves violence and destruction. "
The exhibit will be held on the four new walls recently installed in Gallery Z. Join us for the opening reception on Thursday, February 18th from 5-9pm. All four artists will be present. Armenian Artists: 101 Years
|
The newly transformed Gallery Z (Est. Jan. 2001, celebrating 15 years) is thrilled to present this new exhibit. Join us on the third Thursday of the month as we celebrate Gallery Night Providence.
April showers Gallery Z with a varied exhibit of Armenian artists. Last year at this time, our previous additional location, Studio Z, featured an extensive commemorative multimedia exhibit of the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide, the first genocide of the twentieth century, not only of many works of Armenian art, archival material and historical propaganda affiches and posters, theatrical readings, poetry recitations, live music and theatre, documentary film screenings, artist talks, lectures and continuous video footage. Art works by numerous prominent Armenian and Armenian-American artists will be on exhibit at Gallery Z this year, including Emma Gregorian as the featured artist. Born and raised in Gyumri, Armenia, her paintings have been exhibited worldwide in both group and solo in a series of shows: New York, Paris, Moscow, Toronto, Boston, New Mexico, Belgium, Beirut, Iraq, Armenia and Yugoslavia. She currently lives in Sunnyside, Queens, NY. "...On her canvases, paints turn to color, a world of hope and vibration...the viewer will see from the early savage beauty of Armenia to today's sophisticated and refined world...a pubescence of color, line and rhythm." Rafael Petrosyan, Artist, 1997, New York |
Ian Mohon,
|
Ian Mohon, b. 1975, paints in acrylics and oils to create his bright, dimensional works. Ian's textural and sprightly color palette moves the eye across the canvas, stimulating the viewer's vision to almost vibrate with energy and color. Originally from Houston, Texas, Ian resides in Providence, RI.
ARTIST STATEMENT by Ian Mohon With the sight of receding snows, spring pushes in. First a warm breeze, birds and bees herald the new life to come. Spring arrives with light, color, and scent. This series celebrates this excitement of color and vibrance for life. Taken from photos from my garden and bouquets bought for my wife over the years, the images are painted in an abstracted manner that emphasize the underlying energy that connects all life. With every glance, this series means to remind the viewer of sensations from past springs and old loves. A lighthearted life filled with light and color. Angelo Marinosci, Jr - Prof. Angelo Marinosci, Jr. (retired) a resident of Warren, RI studied at L.I.U, C.C.R.I., U.R.I., R.I.S.D., R.I.C., N.Y.U, Venice and Murano Italy. He has also worked under the influence of several well known artists in various mediums, including: Livio Seguso, (glass); Arnold Newman, (Photography); Eugene Lee, (Set Design); Gene Tonnoff, (Painting); Enrico Pinardi, (Sculpture); and others as well. He has been making art throughout his life and exhibiting throughout. ARTIST STATEMENT by Angelo Marinosci, Jr. By most standards, my education and early experiences in the arts left me predisposed to make, paint, draw, sculpt, photograph, etc., along the most traditional confines of the objective and nonobjective borderlines of art. I like being a little more playful than that and have most often to entertain myself with the making of my own work. Though my photography has been greatly influenced by the outside world and my earthly experiences, my painting has been more about my inside world, and my music has been the philosophical glue that holds it all together. I move within my aesthetic freely and it all pretty much is prompted by the same instinct to express myself. I hope you will enjoy this small collection of paintings, drawings and studies which speak to this. |
Larry Sykes - For over fifty years esteemed artist, photographer and educator Larry Sykes has depicted the world's societies in his camera. Storytelling is his artistic objective. Each cultural artifact has an inseparable identity to society; it is up to the storyteller to connect history to memory, Sykes is simultaneously a photographer, archaeologist, and material culturalist. He (b.1931) is a retired professor of art at Rhode Island College, where he developed the college's photography curriculum. He received his masters from Pratt Institute, New York, and his undergraduate degree from Morgan, where he was Director of the Carl J. Murphy Fine Arts Center. He has taught at New York University, the College of Art in Kumasi, Ghana, and the Parsons School of Design West Africa Program. Later, Sykes served as commissioner for the Rhode Island Council of the Arts. His works have appeared in numerous books, journals and museums worldwide, including commissions for the Smithsonian National Zoological Park. "The amazing Larry Sykes, a professor to many and a mentor to most, crosses the intellectual landscape through powerful images, haunting experiences and an iron clad sense for historic perspective.... with the wisdom of a cunning shaman, the artist will take you through a personalized journey ..." Angelo Marinosci, Jr.,
Alan Metnick has been photographing in Poland for 12 years. The work has focused on the events of the Second World War, the Holocaust, the destruction of Poland's Jewish community and people, and to a lesser extent some vestiges of post WW II Communism. The work presented in this exhibit pictures Poland as a place like all other places: a photo of dancing horses in a circus, lovers on a rainy night, a musician and his accordion, windows looking inward and backward, reflecting and projecting a strange familiarity. This is work he has not shown yet. It will be included in his third book picturing Poland. His first book, "Captured in Memory", was just released and will be available at the exhibit.
ARTIST STATEMENT by Alan Metnick:
Try to imagine your day visually before you've lived it.
Try to imagine it in words. Try to write it. Then go out and live it. Taste it. Feel it. Smell it. Getting up in the morning can be the beginning of a Wondrous experience.
Alan Metnick, a Providence-based artist b. 1941 in Chicago, has been creating art for over forty years. He received a BS in History from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1963 and an MFA in Photography from Rhode Island School of Design in 1973. He has taught photography and silk screening at numerous colleges throughout New England. His works have been exhibited in many galleries and solo shows, including the Newport Art Museum, RISD, ICA/Boston, and several exhibits in Poland, and has works in numerous museum collections throughout the U.S., among others the Metropolitan Museum of Art/New York, Library of Congress, Los Angeles County Museum of Art/Los Angeles, Museum of Fine Arts/ Houston, TX; Art Institute of Boston, High Museum of Art/Atlanta, GA, Armenian Library Museum of America/Watertown, MA. Alan's art works include photography, serigraphy, stained glass, painting and drawing. From 2012 through 2016, Alan has been "traveling, away, thinking about stuff."
Linda DiFrenna,

GALLERY Z (established in January 2001, now celebrating 15 years) welcomes summer with a June exhibit featuring works by LINDA DIFRENNA, LARA B., HELENA STOCKAR and VIRGINIA DELGADO. The exhibit runs from Thursday, June 9th through Saturday, July 2nd, 2016, with an Opening Reception Thursday, June 16th from 5-9PM.
Linda DiFrenna (b. 1959), a local multimedia artist with degrees from Roger Williams University and the RISD, also studied in Germany. This photography exhibit includes both straight and manipulated photographs. According to Linda, "My intention as an artist is to create inspirational works of art which bring the viewer a sense of discovery that is exciting and exhilarating. I want to create images that are evocative, curious, mysterious, and unexpected... that will make the viewer pause in front of the piece and really look closely. It is important to me that my work evokes emotions that encourage dialogue...Alternative and imaginative approaches to making art produce sensations and emotions I remember experiencing as a child..." Linda's work has been exhibited throughout New England, Florida, Louisiana and New York City. She has taught at CCRI, the RISD Museum, Saint Andrew's School and Fisher College. Lara B, born (b. 1977) and raised in Beirut, attended the Toros Roslin Art Academy of Beirut and the Lebanese University of Fine Arts, graduating with honors in 2001. She immersed herself in circles of established Armenian artists and enjoyed early recognition in a number of Beirut shows, earning distinction with first prize at the National University of Fine Arts and third prize at the Artistes Association of Beirut in 2001. |
Lara B. moved to the US in 2002, and has continued to garner artistic acclaim. Within two years, her art was shown at group exhibits in New York, San Francisco and Providence, and at two solo shows in Providence and Oakland. In winter 2003 her work was selected for a magazine cover with international distribution. She resides in California, where she continues her prolific tradition.
"Capturing the moment's complexity of the human psyche is the driving force of Lara B.'s paintings. Windows and arches are prominently displayed, providing hope in the form of light and strength as stable edifices. Hues often seem dark and monotone at initial gaze, however, just as one's eyes need to accommodate upon entering into a dimly lit room, a more detailed viewing of Lara B.'s work reveals a true panorama of colors. This gradual perceptibility affords greater appreciation into the depth and complexity of Lara's paintings."
Helena Stockar (b. 1933, d. 2013) was born and grew up in Czechoslovakia, where she lived through WWII in Prague and behind the Iron Curtain, earning an industrial design degree from Prague's School of Design. Seeking political freedom and to join her husband, who had already escaped, she was eventually allowed to emigrate to the US in 1968, settling in RI. Helena infused a deep knowledge of art history into her work and an obsession with people and color. She has been featured in "Who's Who in The World", "Who's Who in in America", and "Who's Who of American Women". Her work was exhibited in major US cities, the Czech Republic and Scotland, and is in collections worldwide, including locally in Johnson and Wales University and Hasbro Children's Hospital, Providence. Her work depicts people struggling against nature and man's evil, exploring the depths of complexity and the comparison between natural events and social injustices.
From the artist's statement, "When I paint, I think mainly about the light, color, and composition. My thoughts, philosophy, and message are not solely about the subject matter, but about perfecting the balance of those elements. The struggle for this perfection was crystallized prior to the creation on any individual work. It comes to me as a direct communication between you, the observer, and me, the painter." After moving to Pennsylvania in 2012, Helena died in November 2013 after a brief illness.
Virginia Delgado (b. 1969) has been photographing street scenes and cityscapes for the last fifteen years, traveling to Istanbul, Paris, Naples, Buenos Aires, London and New York, among other major cities. Exclusively shooting black and white film, she produces her own prints in her darkroom, leaving the negative edges visible to show that she works in film, and doesn't crop or manipulate her images beyond what can be done in the darkroom. She is a Bristol, RI, resident and has been a featured artist in Bristol-Warren Art Night and Providence Gallery Night.
Virginia's artist statement says, "I am first generation American and my Uruguayan parents were my first artistic influence. My father was a sculptor with a great talent for life drawing. My mother was a painter who followed the same classical school as my father. I grew up in Fort Lee, New Jersey, comparing Da Vinci to Michelangelo and hearing stories about Van Gogh and his ear. Art was everywhere. Every afternoon my parents would cross the George Washington Bridge and board the A train Downtown to The Art Students' League. By the time I was in College, I was also going to classes. Not because I showed any real talent in drawing, but because it would refine my eye, my father said. I would learn to see. And I did."

And I did."

Farnaz Mobayyen,

Farnaz Mobayyen has been drawing since she was encouraged as a very young child. In her words, "I have always been passionate about the arts. This deep passion in me manifests itself into love for painting. Painting is like breathing air to me, without it, I don't feel alive. With paint, I can free my creative energy onto the canvas. When I look at colors, lines and shapes that I create, I see a portrait of my soul. Each active brush stroke shows a corner of the world inside me, the world that is energetic, bold and passionate."
Farnaz refers to herself as a spontaneous painter who usually paints from her imagination, but sometimes utilizes her surroundings, rendering her observations in an abstract style. "I like to capture the soul and the spirit of the world outside and inside me." Farnaz has a BFA in painting and drawing from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
