"The Square Show"
|
"The Square Show", a popular new type of gallery exhibition style from across the pond is about to pop up at Gallery Z! This upcoming trend in Europe has spiked our interest, and we cannot wait to see how our artists and gallery goers react to this style of showing art. As always, we have a very diverse collection of artists, but this time they all have the same guidelines. Each artist that has chosen to participate in this show has been given three canvases. One is 12x12in, one is 16x16in, and one is 20x20in. Each of the artists' three canvases reflects their styles and chosen mediums. One of the most exciting details of this show is that the price points are very fair; $250(small), $450(medium), and $650(large).
This fresh concept is a phenomenal way to show off our 122nd exhibit in our 12th year, and to hopefully bring the warmer weather in with a little bit of imagination and excitement. Although each artist is given the same sized canvases, they all still have very different styles in mediums. There will be paintings, drawings, photography, mixed media, some found object work, and more. By the time these artists are done working the canvases, the only thing identical of all the works in this show will be the sizes of the art. We have never done anything like this, so be sure to come check it out. The artists in this exhibit are: Christine Ashley b.1951, Anoush Bargamian b. 1963, Maggie Bouchard b.1990, Mike Bryce b. 1967, Bonnie Buck b.1944, Bob Dilworth b.1951, Linda DiFrenna b.1949, Kim Ellery b.1963, Judith Ferrara b.1942 , Stacey Graham b.1975, Eveline Luppi b.1951, Alaina Mahoney b.1987, Stephanie Marzella b. 1961, Farnaz Mobbayan b.1973, Ian Mohon b.1975, Kevork Mourad b.1970, Brian O'Malley b.1970, Julian Penrose b.1961, Sandra Pezzullo b.1963, Ewa Romaszewicz b.1977, Christian Rubeck b.1966, Shari Rubeck b.1970, Amy Ryan b.1962, Erin Starr b.1970, Melissa Thyden b.1987, Sirarpi Heghinian Walzer b.1958, Toba Weintraub b.1948, CC Wolf b.1947, and Vincent Wolf b.1977. |
Sharon Cutts,
|
PROVIDENCE R.I. On Thursday, May 16, 2013, join us for the opening reception for our newest exhibition featuring artists Sharon Cutts, Valorie Sheehan, and Sue Butler from 5:00-9:00pm.
For the month of May into the beginning of June, it is Gallery Z's pleasure to host an exhibition of three talented Gallery Z artists. These three women have shown their works in the gallery on numerous occasions, brightening up any show with their colorful and imaginative pieces. From painting flowers to shooting canvases with shotguns, these artists are living examples of the strength and importance of womanhood in today's culture, both in the art world and outside of it. Sharon Cutts is a woman of many mediums. From figurative paintings in oil on canvas, to columnar paintings referencing DNA codes, Sharon's versatility and creative gifts shine. She started oil painting at the young age of 13, continued through high school, and then on to the University of Wisconsin, earning her BA in art history with a concentration in ceramics. After returning to her hometown to teach classes in drawing and ceramics, she moved to Chicago to attend law school, eventually teaching at two Chicago law colleges. She subsequently returned to the art world where she experimented with shooting her canvases with shotguns to stress her feelings about the changing culture around her. Sharon's art is a sight to behold with history behind each brush stroke or bullet hole. |
"Myths, fairy tales, and legends have always served to entertain and educate as well as shape the values and morals of the listener"- Valorie Sheehan One could say that Valorie Sheehan is a true advocate of "girl-power". As a daughter, mother of daughters, sister, wife, and teacher at an all-girls school in Providence, she has always been fascinated with the way women, young or old, are shaped by today's society. Valorie incorporates "Jungian Archetypes", or reliquary figures, into her work to depict goddess myths of female power and glory. She uses her art as a form of educating, using fairy tales to instill the power of a pure heart into the young girls who hear them, doing her part to steer young women of today down the correct path.
Last, but not least, Sue Butler is the third artist exhibited in this show. A true homebody, Sue paints interior spaces familiar to her. All the objects she paints in her loose and expressive style symbolize memories and personal meaning, such as flowers sent to her, or selected containers she admires for the color and/or shape. Her color palette is bold, bright, and exciting, showing her viewers just how wonderful every-day surroundings really are. Her studio is her home, and her home lends her visions for future paintings.
On the last Thursday of every month, a participating Public Art Window non-profit organization hosts a fundraising event at Gallery Z to elevate public consciousness for their cause. This month on Thursday, May 30th, from 5-7 (Gallery Z's Art, Food, and Wine Creating Awareness for a Cause), Gallery Z will partner with Rites and Reason Theater. This group is a research component of the Department of Africana Studies at Brown University, and it develops new work by playwrights of all descriptions. The trademark of this organization is its unique Research to Performance Method (RPM) of play development. Plays developed by Rites and Reason have had successful productions on Broadway and in regional and national tours and theaters. The Theatre prides itself on its partnerships and collaborations in the community. Since its founding, thousands of students have participated in Rites and Reason projects and productions, often working side by side with professional and community actors, writers, directors, designers and dramaturges. Elibekians:
|
PROVIDENCE, R.I. /MARCH 2009 - The summer months of June and July are a family affair at Gallery Z with offerings from three different members of the Elibekian family and artwork spanning three generations.
For generations the tradition of painting has been passed down within the Elibekian family, resulting in brilliant artistic compositions that define the family's artistic legacy. The show will feature paintings by Vagharshag Elibekian, his son Robert Elibekian, and grandson Areg Elibekian. The works of these three artists are quite different despite their shared heritage. The elder Vagharshag was born in Tbilisi, Georgia in 1910. It was there that he directed Tbilisi's Armenian Theatre and worked as a painter. He was able to portray Tbilisi's recent past with his carefully detailed paintings. His work captures scenes of traditional Georgian customs, architecture, and lifestyles and brings them to life. His works are among the permanent collections of The National Art Gallery of Armenia, The National Art Gallery of Georgia, The National Art Gallery of Litvanya, and the Museums of Oriental Art in Moscow. His son, Robert Elibekian, was born in 1941 in Tbilisi, Georgia. He graduated from Yerevan's Institute of Drama and Fine Arts in 1969. His paintings are influenced by his academic background, and by his creations of decor and costumes for film, theater and opera. Through these paintings he reveals an imaginary world of fantasy and dream characters. He has created numerous set designs and costumes for operas, ballets, films and plays, and his works are part of the collections in many museums including The National Gallery of Armenia. |
The son of Robert, Areg Elibekian represents the youngest artist in this exhibition. Areg was born in Yerevan, Armenia, in 1970. He graduated from Yerevan's Institute of Drama and Fine Arts in 1992. Areg's work is well-defined, straightforward and implies permanence, involving predominantly the bourgeoisie. He has since moved to Montreal and travels to Paris every summer to paint.
Each of these talented artists is included in the permanent collections of prestigious museums located all over the world.
Also, on the last Thursday of every month, a participating Public Art Window non-profit organization hosts a fundraising event at Gallery Z to elevate public consciousness for their cause. This month on Thursday, June 27, 2013, we will be hosting the event for "The New Millennium Art Factory". For this non-profit organization, artists from around Rhode Island will provide basic to intermediate arts instruction to children aged 7-17 at the Central Falls library, which is located at 205 Central Street. http://www.cfsai.com/

Bob Dilworth,
|
Gallery Z is excited to open the fall season with a contemporary and intriguing display containing selected works of three Gallery Z artists, Bob Dilworth, Ian Mohon and Julian Penrose, all of whom are based in Providence, Rhode Island.
Ian Mohon, b. 1975, paints in acrylics and oils to create bright, dimensional works. Focusing on studies of the human form, Ian's textural and spritely color palette serve to move the eye across the canvas, forcing the viewer's vision to almost vibrate with energy and color. Originally from Houston, Texas, Ian relocated to Providence, RI, and has recently celebrated the birth of his first child. Julian Penrose, b. 1961, creates three-dimensional assemblage art from found and recycled objects. With a background in landscape architecture, Julian's works reflect his knowledge of drafting and design. He has combined elements of the two disciplines over the years to develop his current style and work. These tight architectural compositions are often reminiscent of Cornell's boxes and Rauschenberg's constructions. "I find that the most common and usual object can be made into a thing of beauty", Julian states. His work is represented in Providence, RI, and Philadelphia, PA. Bob Dilworth creates work that frequently tackles issues of race, culture, ethnicity, family, heritage and xenophobia through metaphor and allegory. His oil paintings are nationally recognized and exhibited, and he has won countless awards. Bob has taught art and design at colleges and universities throughout the country, including Princeton University, Brown University and Columbia College in Chicago. He now teaches full time at the University of Rhode Island. Traditionally, on the last Thursday of each month, the participating Public Art Window organization at Gallery Z hosts a fundraising event to elevate public awareness and consciousness for its cause. Stephan Brigidi
|
Stephan Brigidi has been a practicing artist for more than forty years. His obsession has always been with people and culture. He is a self-described historian, who traces his own history within the context of Italian family origins as well as world history. Brigidi has continually been concerned with art that informs him about social issues and multi-cultural events. He has also based his many years as an educator within this framework. He is currently a member of the Humanities faculty at Roger Williams University.
The City is the chosen theme for this, his second one-person exhibit at Z Gallery. It is the urban environment that has drawn his attention the past ten years, and this exhibit presents work done domestically, rather than his know European and Hawaiian photographs. Brigidi has photographed the mundane, the ordinary, the gritty streets, industrial sites and urban objects, deliberately sans people. His works on paper, as collage with paint and other media, literally present the fragments of the city environs. Born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1951, Brigidi is an extremely widely published and exhibited artist whose work has been in over 40 museums throughout the United States and Europe, among them the Whitney Museum of American Art; Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris; American Academy, Rome; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Wash., DC; Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design; Rhode Island Historical Society; Collections of University of Parma, Italy; Chrysler Museum, Norfolk, VA; Santa Barbara Museum of Art, CA; Smithsonian Institution; Library of Congress; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX; The Newport Art Museum;DeCordova Museum, Lincoln, MA; Peabody Essex Museum; Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago, and many others. |

A solo exhibit by internationally renowned abstract artist Ron Ehrlich opens as the premier exhibit at Gallery Z's the new ADDITIONAL SPACE, Studio Z: A Visual Arts and Performance Space, located at Butcher Block Mill 25 Eagle Street, Providence. Almost seventy 20" x 30" of Ron Ehrlich's oil on paper paintings of horses have been selected for this special-focus exhibit. After receiving his BFA from Connecticut College in 1976, this world renowned prolific artist spent several years in Japan in a monastery in the province of Bizen while studying that region's famous ceramics, which served to immensely influencing his art. After returning to the US, Ehrlich spent two years continuing his study of art at the Kansas City Art Institute and two years at the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence. These abstract expressionist paintings of horses are informed by this aesthetic of Japanese Bizen pottery which infuses Ehrlich's work. In 1999, Ehrlich was chosen for Outward Bound: American Art on the Brink of the 21st Century, a presentation of the work of 100 American artists in major venues including museums across China, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Rim. Ehrlich's art is regularly shown in solo exhibitions in major galleries throughout the US and has been exhibited in numerous Asian cities. Six works are in permanent residency at the Gyumri Museum in Armenia, and several more at the Armenian Library and Museum of America in Watertown, Massachusetts. Kevork Mouad is represented in the Middle East by Rafia Gallery in Damascus, Syria, where he exhibited in 2009. In 2010 and 2011, Kevork co-produced and created two plays, with actress/singer Anais Tekerian of Zulal: Tangled Yarn and Waterlogged, which premiered at the New York International Fringe Festival and toured San Francisco and the Berkshires. Another show was performed in the Lincoln Center Atrium in NYC, with composer Ezequiel Vinao.
