“Spring”
|
“Spring” will be Gallery Z’s 112th exhibit, and features paintings and black and white works on paper. This will be Kevork Mourad’s 10th consecutive solo exhibit at Gallery Z. Kevork has been featured in group shows at the NYU Small Works Gallery in 2005 and 2007. His digital piece, The Map of Future Movements, toured as part of a group exhibition in Jerusalem and Ramallah, and was in the 2010 Liverpool Biennial. He has also had a solo exhibit at the JK Gallery in Los Angeles.
Mourad’s work has also been exhibited in the courtyard Gallery in Dubai 2009 and 2010. Five of his pieces are in the permanent collection on the 70th floor of the Bourj Khalife in Dubai. He has had work auctioned twice at Christie’s Dubai. With his technique of spontaneous painting, where he shares the stage with musicians, Kevork uses harsh black lines and palettes of layered color to bring his paintings to life, moving in rhythm with his musical counterparts. He has collaborated with many world class musicians including Syrian clarinetist Kinan Azmeh to American cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Kevork is also a member of the Silk Road Ensemble as a visual artist. He has performed at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Chelsea Museum of Art, The Bronx Museum of Art, the Rhode Island School of Design, the Chess Festival of Mexico City, The Armenian Center for Contemporary Experimental Art in Yerevan, Le Festival du Monde Arabe in Montreal, the Stillwater Festival, the Nara Museum in Japan, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Rubin Museum of Art, Harvard University, the American Museum of Natural History, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Central Park’s Summerstage with the Silk Road Ensemble and Bobby McFerrin. His most recent show was in the Lincoln Center Atrium in NYC, with composer Ezequiel Viñao. Kevork was born in 1970 in Syria and received his MFA from the Yerevan Institute of Fine Arts in Armenia in 1996. He currently lives and works in New York. |
“AFROCENTRIC: From the Perspective of Black Women Artists”
|
Eighteen New England artists invite you to enter a world you’ve never seen. Historically underrepresented and frequently misrepresented, 18 black women who are artists have created a thoughtful and compelling exhibition. Themes are diverse ranging from loss during Hurricane Katrina to a loving relationship between brothers. On exhibit are paintings, photography, collages, monoprints, stained glass, hand made quilts and mixed media artwork. Drawing inspiration from family, faith, music, dance and community, these artists create a unique relationship between the artwork and the viewer. This focused selection of approximately 40 works highlights Afrocentrism, a unique view of the world.
The exhibition includes three events. The first is the exhibition opening on Thursday, April 19th, Gallery Night from 5-9 PM presenting artwork created by African American women artists. The second event on Saturday, April 21st from 9- 11 AM at RISD Multicultural Center, is a Story Quilt Workshop for middle and high school students led by Simone Spruce Torres, a Rhode Island artist. The third event will be on Thursday, April 26th* at 5:30pm, a lecture on African American Women Artists of the 20th and 21st centuries delivered by Lisa Farrington, PhD, Chair, Art and Music Department at John Jay College, CUNY. “Atelier of Assemblage Artists”
|
“Triple A: Atelier of Assemblage Artists” will be Gallery Z’s 114th exhibit, a travel through this unique style of art. Assemblage art by definition is “an artistic process in which a three-dimensional artistic composition is made from putting together collected objects”. The three assemblage artists that will be exhibiting are Julian Penrose, Donalyn Schofield and John Trainor.
Julian Penrose resides in Providence, Rhode Island and has been working as an assemblage artist since studying Art at Pitzer College, under the influence of artist Paul Darrow. He attended Landscape Architecture School where he learned drafting and design, two skills that have been important to the creation of his assemblages. His work begins purely abstract using found and collected materials for the shape and form, integrating color, texture, scale and meaning. Donalyn Schofield, from New Braintree, Massachusetts, focuses more as a paper artist, often including found objects and altering books as the structure for some of her work. Donalyn teaches art history at Anna Maria College in Paxton as well as Mount Wachusett Community College. She also lectures in art history and teaches collage classes at the Worcester Art Museum, and is a member of Arts Worcester. John Trainor, an assemblage artist from Tolland Ct. now in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, states “I work with found objects because I am drawn to them. Something about their patina, and ‘lost purpose,’ their potential for telling new stories keep pulling me in.” His assemblages make a statement about the passage of time, and how time alters things and erases their stories. He has been working in the media for many years and is now returning to study Art History at CCRI. |
Besides the exhibition of these artist's works, the artists will give a glimpse into their process by recreating a worktable from their studio.
The opening reception for this exhibit will be held on Gallery Night, Thursday, May 17th, from 5 to 9 PM. This five week exhibit will run from May 10th through June 9th, 2012. Throughout the exhibit, the artists will be interactive at Gallery Z doing demonstrations. There will be an artist talk on Saturday, May 19th at 4:00 – 6:00 PM. Light Refreshments will be served.
Also, on the last Thursday of each month, the participating Public Art Window organization at Gallery Z hosts a fundraising event to elevate public consciousness for their cause. On Thursday, May 31st, from 5-7 pm, (Gallery Z’s Art, Food & Wine Creating Awareness for a Cause) Gallery Z will partner with The Kent Center www.thekentcenter.org of Providence, Rhode Island. This event will feature cuisine provided by a Providence restaurant and world-class hand selected wine provided by Mark Gasbarro of Gasbarro’s Wines located at 361 Atwells Ave. on Historic Federal Hill.

“RECONFIGURED EGOS”
|
Gallery Z is excited to host “Re-Configured Egos” a duo exhibit by Shari and Christian Rubeck. Come and experience wild, contemporary paintings and sculptures by this husband and wife team as they draw upon human and animal psyche, street art, fantasy and humor for inspiration.
Shari Weschler Rubeck (b. 1970), is originally from Larchmont, NY. She graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art with a major in painting and a minor in art history. She currently lives in Kingstown, Rhode Island. Shari has been awarded and published as a Featured Emerging Artist in Visual Overture’s fall 2011 issue. Her works have exhibited in New York, Washington DC, Maryland, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. In “Re-Configured Egos”, Shari will be presenting a new body of work titled “New Beginnings”. She states “Connectivity is strong in a shrinking world. A new race is in progress. Some hold onto the organic, while many submit to the machine. Fur, feather, scale, skin, chips and wires; only time will tell what wondrous new shapes these characters will assume.” Christian Rubeck (b. 1966), is originally from Mercersburg, PA, and went to Virginia Commonwealth University with a major in sculpture. Inspired by an elective sculpture class in 1985, Christian’s first “found objects” were created after being pulled from Richmond, Virginia’s alleys. Since then he had been in numerous exhibits in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Maryland. |
Christian states “One of my first pieces titled “Love seat” started with a discarded restaurant booth. Twenty seven years later, I have “Love seat II” as part of this exhibition. It may be interesting to compare the photo in my binder with the follow-up piece in the gallery.” He continues, “This body of work comes at a time of personal change and introspection.”
Shari and Christian Rubeck share a studio they call “Art in Mind Studios” in North Kingstown, Rhode Island.
The opening reception will be on Thursday, July 19th from 5 – 9 PM. The exhibit runs from July 5th through July 28th.

Francesco Agresti
|
For the month of August Gallery Z is proud to present an exhibit by Francesco Agresti and Benjamin Giguere. Agresti’s incredible abstract oil paintings find a poetic balance between symmetry and emotion, while Giguere’s hand blown glass creations explore the boundaries of structure through fluidity.
Francesco Agresti (b.1949) was born and raised in Itri, Italy. He received his education in New York, where he received his BFA and MFA at Hunter /Lehman College CUNY (City University of NY). His first exhibitions as an emerging artist were at the Museum of Bronx, NYC, and at the PS1 Contemporary Art Center. Agresti then returned to Italy to pursue painting and teach at University of La Verne in Napoli. In the early nineties, Francesco returned to America to teach as a Professor of the visual arts Universities in Winston-Salem, Greensboro North Carolina before finding paradise in his current home, Venice, Florida, where he creates and paints. Francesco has had several showings and representations in Italy, Germany, Russia and many in the USA as well, including: New York, Iowa, North Carolina, Maryland, Georgia and Florida. Francesco still keeps a studio in Via Appia, Italy, where he returns at least once a year to paint. In this exhibit, Francesco will be showcasing a fantastic collection of newer works. He describes his style as geometric abstraction. He states: “My work begins with the body, the tangible, the sensual. The body, however suggested, becomes the metaphor for transformative reality. The body becomes a landscape and the landscape becomes a ritualized space where emotions move. The outside becomes the inside; the framed, the boundless.” |
Benjamin Giguere (b.1978) stumbled upon the art of glass working in 1997 when he took a temporary job at a small town glass factory in Vermont. Soon enough, though, he found himself working full time, apprenticed under master glass workers from around the world. This job led to an 11 year career at Simon Pearce, one of the finest crystal factories worldwide. Ben moved to Providence, RI in 2008 to learn more techniques in glass making. In 2011, Ben created GATHER GLASS, a studio where he now teaches and works on design projects
Ben states: “As an artist, my creative process involves a synergistic dance of sorts. I constantly strive to find new ways to connect the alchemical to the material elements of glass in design. My most inspired work, however, comes from learning to allow the glass to inform me how and what it wishes to become. This approach continues to fuel my passion and obsession with glass.”
The opening reception will be on Thursday, August 16th from 5 – 9 PM. The exhibit runs from August 2nd through September 1st.
Also, on the last Thursday of each month, the participating Public Art Window organization at Gallery Z hosts a fundraising event to elevate public consciousness for their cause. This month, on Thursday, August 30th, from 5-7 pm, (Gallery Z’s Art, Food & Wine Creating Awareness for a Cause) Gallery Z will partner with the Italian American Historical Society. The society supports and presents programs of a social, cultural, and historical nature for both the membership and the community. To read more about the Society, visit iahsofri.org. "Paradise Paths: Lost in the Stars"
|
Gallery Z Director Berge Ara Zobian is proud to present an exhibit by his close friend, mentor, and esteemed photographer, Larry Sykes, in the second solo exhibit in a decade at the gallery. In "Paradise Paths: Lost in the Stars," Sykes brings with him a new dimension of photography. His photo-constructions showcase beautiful architecture, everyday scenes, and even major historical events. Delve in to multilayered, three dimensional photo constructions that tell stories of life, culture, and society.
Larry Sykes (b.1931) earned his masters at the Pratt Institute in New York, after receiving his undergraduate degree from Morgan. He served as Director of the Carl J. Murphy Fine Arts Center at Morgan and later taught at the New York University, the College of Art in Kumasi, Ghana and the Parsons School of Design West Africa Program. Later, Sykes served as commissioner for the Rhode Island Council of the Arts. His works have appeared in numerous books, journals, and museums worldwide, including commissions done for the Smithsonian National Zoological Park. For more than fifty years, Sykes has surveyed the world's societies through his camera's lens. He states: "Material culture is a reflection of identity that mirrors a character that is congealed, accentuated, or masked. The photographer looks beyond the mask. He re-envisions and constructs alternative social possibilities that meditate contradictions in material forms and social cultures. In return, the viewer is compelled to confront the layered meanings that objects assume, as they are seen through a single lens with multiple dimensions." For Sykes, the main goal is storytelling. Every cultural artifact has an inseparable identity that ties itself to society, but there is no direct route from the material object to the social history. As such, it is up to the storyteller, Sykes, to connect history to memory, and capture those memories through photography. |
The opening reception will be on Thursday, September 20th from 5 - 9 PM. The exhibit runs from September 6th through October 6th.

"New Paintings by Anthony Tomaselli"
|
Anthony Tomselli (b. 1954) is a Providence artist to the core. He truly loves his craft and his subject matters are informed by the eccentric landscapes of New England. He often selects the Providence skyline as his muse. His goal, however, is not to create an exact representation, but rather to connect the viewer to the soul of the work or memory of such a place. Tomaselli is currently represented by 9 galleries on the East Coast.
The exhibition will consist of over 50 pieces of original art works never exhibited before with different sizes priced at $600 per piece. This will be Gallery Z's 119th exhibit in 11 years, and runs from October 11th through November 10th, 2012. Tomaselli received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Studio Art at Rhode Island College in 1976 and went on to study architecture extensively at the Boston Architectural Center. He has had numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout New England, and he has over a dozen collections, including one at the Rhode Island Convention Center. Tomaselli is a highly acclaimed artist who has accumulated a long list of awards and honors; the most recent being 1st Prize Members Exhibit at the prestigious Providence Art Club, where he currently teaches painting. "My wish for all whom I engage in life with is this...for you to feel a bit of the passion that I feel for life and painting. I wish for you to feel the spirit of life flowing through your being as it does to me when brush meets canvas." Anthony Tomaselli |
