"The Unknown Artists”
|
The term “Unknown Artists” is applied to describe a collection where identity and origin are less important then the artwork itself. The exhibition will include selections from artists who are unlisted or insufficiently documented as well as works bearing no signature. In examples where the artist is known, it is often the case that few or no records exist detailing the whereabouts of other pieces produced by the artist. The hours of research and scrutiny that are involved when identifying an artwork does not always prove to be fruitful, but the variety of artwork Gallery Z will feature highlights a number of artistic movements that defined 20th century art.
The subjective nature of art, whatever medium it may be, allows for the appreciation of quality and aesthetic beauty regardless of its obscurity. The ability of the viewer to form individual interpretations and relate to work in a unique way is the driving force behind this exhibition. The artwork Gallery Z has chosen to display bears strength of quality that lets the artwork stand on its own merit. The exhibition includes collectible works of all genres, from artists both living and non-living, spanning a time frame of approximately 100 years. A specific artwork that exemplifies the theme of this show is an elegant, early 20th century landscape, by an unlisted Italian artist. The painterly strokes and subtle blending of cool tones employed in this autumn scene shows traces of an Impressionistic influence. Another selection included in the exhibit is an American genre scene that shows a mastery of the chiaroscuro technique and provides a unique narrative. |
"Sit Down"
|
Furniture is not something one typically views as a form of art, yet it is something that shapes the way we live our daily lives. In this exhibition the viewer will be asked to acknowledge and investigate the quality of line, the importance of texture, the impact of color, the consequence of material and the process that goes into the making of each piece displayed, in order to enhance ones experience with the final piece of art. Every piece has more to be shared than just what meets the eye at first glance. Sit Down: the process of furniture design introduces the viewer to the story behind the object by displaying work along with a collection of materials that were part of its creation, in an attempt to build a stronger connection between object and viewer.
|
This exhibition will be curated by Kallie Weinkle, a senior at the Rhode Island School of Design. She will be graduating this spring with her BFA in Furniture Design and hopes to convey how the process of interaction between an object or landscape and an individual can be used as a communicative device in order to educate the user about the intentions and goals of the designer.
This brief exhibition will be an event everyone needs to mark their calendars for. It features the most innovative and energetic young designers from in and around the Providence area. Among the talents included in this exhibition is Zeke Leonard. His work centers on the theme of using repurposed materials, as his chairs are built from floor boards that were salvaged from a mill in South County. Another designer involved in the show is George Dubinsky. His intuitive, quick decision making style uses the processes of staving and coopering to produce a fine example executed in European beech wood.
Be sure not to miss the opening reception, hosted on Thursday, March 20th from 5-9 pm. You will have the chance to meet and discuss the work with the designers and see why Providence has a bright future in the field of Furniture Design.

“Kevork Mourad, Recent Work” Opening Reception: Thursday, April 17, 2008. 5-9pm Artist Performance: Wednesday, April 16
|
Gallery Z invites you to join us for the opening reception of Recent Work, by internationally acclaimed artist Kevork Mourad, on Thursday, April 17, 2008 from 5-9pm. Artist Kevork Mourad will be present at the opening reception.
In his 7th consecutive solo exhibit at Gallery Z, entitled Recent Work, Mourad explores themes of displacement, lost geographies, and refers to contemporary politics --especially of his native Middle East. While his palette and style have developed over the years, his paintings retain their affinity for story-telling and convey a sense of movement caught in stillness. In looking at his paintings, one can see the illustrator laying his visual interpretations of music upon the canvas, as the melding of visual and aural landscapes has long been a centre-point of his work. Kevork Mourad has exhibited in many galleries across the United States and abroad since leaving Armenia in 1998. He received his MFA from the Yerevan Institute of Art in Armenia in Painting and Illustration. Having grown up in Aleppo, Syria, the influence of both of these cultures are apparent in his work. Kevork Mourad’s artwork has been exhibited at the Tumanyan Museum in Yerevan, Armenia, the Gyumri Museum in Armenia (where six of his pieces are in permanent residency), the NYU Small Works Exhibit, the Sasoontsi Gallery in California, Gallery Evan in NYC, Grace Cathedral and the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, the Armenian Library and Museum of America in Watertown, Massachusetts, and the Rhode Island School of Design Museum. |
Mourad has managed to distinguish himself among other artists through his collaborations on stage with musicians, supplying visual accompaniment to the music with his live painting. His performances provide a unique multi-sensory experience that allows the audience to share in the artistic process. He has performed at prestigious venues with accomplished musicians all over the world. In the spring of 2005, he joined Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, with whom he has performed at the Rhode Island School of Design, Harvard University, the Nara Museum in Nara, Japan, the Rubin Museum in New York, the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the Art Institute of Chicago. In addition,
Whether it is his accolades from critics, or his success in past shows, signs seem to foretell this exhibition being perhaps his strongest showing yet. Providence Journal Art Critic Bill Van Siclen has called Mourad “a New York painter who moves easily between a kind of lyrical abstraction (think Arshile Gorky) and impressionistic realism (think Claude Monet).”

In his current collection, Nilton maintains a passion for telling the story of his country’s culture through his art. The use of color in his large murals reflects his experience and perspective of life in his native Peru where color, music and traditions are the standards of beauty. In his work one finds traces of surrealism, realism, abstract and contemporary styles.
Nilton Cardenas was born and raised in Lima, Peru. At the age of 20, he and his family immigrated to Florida, later settling in Providence, Rhode Island. Nilton studied journalism at the University of San Martin de Porres and Painting at the Institute Superior Jose Sabogal in Lima, Peru. He has exhibited his artwork both individually and collectively in the United States and Spain. Nilton actively promotes Latino art and culture in the local community and is a former Board Member of Sol Gallery. Nilton has been developing his talent with the youth of Providence as an art teacher in schools, summer camps, and in before and after school programs. For this work, he has received recognition awards from City and State officials for his support and impact of art on children. In 2007, Nilton was featured in a solo exhibition hosted by The Consulate General of Peru in Hartford, CT. In 2006, his work was featured at the Venezuela Gallery at the Consulate of Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in New York. |

The event is free to the public and wine and hor dorves will be served.
On Thursday, August 21, from 5-9pm, Gallery Z will have a series of lectures taking place throughout the night. These lectures will explain the processes of the different printing techniques. The lectures will be given by Morgan Calderini and Agata Michalowska, both of whom are printmaking teachers at the AS220 Community Printshop. After having received her BFA in Printmaking from Rhode Island School of Design in 2007, Calderini chose to redefine the hierarchical printshop archetype by establishing and managing Rhode Islands only community printshop with a grant from AmeriCorps VISTA. Combining an interest in preserving a dying craft and sustaining its place in society with a pure desire to provide affordable and accessible printmaking resources, Calderini has found a home at the AS220 Community Printshop. |
Agata Michalowska is an artist and printmaker driven by technique and process. She received her BFA in Printmaking from Rhode Island School of Design in 2007. Michalowska is currently working in the AS220 Community Printshop as well as teaching workshops.

Rhode Island Italian Artists
|
With Gallery Z being the first fine art gallery on Historic Federal Hill, having called it home for the past four years, we have decided to pay homage to the neighborhood that has so warmly embraced us by hosting an exhibition of Rhode Island Italian Artists.
In this exhibition, Gallery Z has selected well established artists of Italian descent from Rhode Island. Featured artists include painters Anthony Tomaselli and Stephanie Marzella, photographers Angelo Marinosci and Salvatore Mancini and renowned sculptor and painter Angelo Rosati. Salvatore Mancini’s work has been published, exhibited and collected throughout America and Europe and he has received Rhode Island’s Pell Award and Italy’s Bolaffi Prize in addition to numerous grants to support his work. Having been born and raised in Rhode Island, Anthony Tomaselli is well known for his paintings of local landscapes. Tomaselli teaches painting to many different audiences, including the painting classes at the Providence Art Club. |
Angelo Marinosci is a well known and respected photographer who possesses an innate ability to preserve and communicate the unique emotion and character of his subjects with his camera. His countless travels around the globe have given him the ability to capture the essence of the cultures he photographs.
Since moving to southern Rhode Island, Stephanie Marzella has been focusing solely on landscape. The driving forces behind Stephanie’s work are her love of nature and interpretive use of color.
The late Angelo Rosati (1920 – 2005) is an accomplished sculptor and painter who studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, where he established the prestigious Bruni Foundry in 1972. Rosati has had over 20 one-man shows of his paintings and sculptures throughout his lifetime. His work is exhibited in Rhode Island, New York City, the national art exhibit in Washington D.C., Mexico, Rome and countless other locations.

The Colors of Italy,
|
Gallery Z has devoted the month of October to a solo exhibition that will feature the photography of Stephan Brigidi. The show will be on display from October 7 through November 8, 2008. On Thursday, October 16th from 5-9pm, an opening reception will be held for the exhibition. Food and wine will be served and Stephan Brigidi will be present to discuss his work.
This exhibition is a retrospective of travel photography by Stephan Brigidi, featuring works in silver-gelatin fiber and ciba-chrome. Both color as well as black and white images will be included. Driven by his desire to better understand his own culture, Brigidi has spent considerable amounts of time in Italy. He utilized his time spent there observing and recording the changes in Italian culture over a thirty – five period. Included are works from Brigidi’s book, Angels of Pompeii, capturing the beauty of the caves and ruins of Pompeii, Italy, where he found himself captivated by the frescoes of angels on the decayed walls of the famed city upon his first visit there in 1972. As a recipient of a Fulbright-Hays Fellowship, Brigidi spent time in Venice during the late 1970’s. The images that chronicle his time spent there are poignant and show the discipline of a highly skilled artist. In addition to the opening reception on Thursday, October 16, Gallery Z will host our monthly Food, Art & Wine event on the final Thursday of the month, October 30, from 5:30 – 8:00pm. |
Gallery Z Holiday
|
Autumn is a time of changes – a philosophy Gallery Z has embraced with our extended Holiday Art exhibition. The month of November will be devoted to a group show to include dozens of artists, with each represented by a limited selection of artwork; some are new works from familiar Gallery Z artists; some are debut works from artists who are new to Gallery Z and Providence. The work will be replaced as it is sold, creating an exhibit that will change from day to day.
The glass art of Roberta Segal is a powerful new addition to Gallery Z this month. Her tradition glass painting techniques have been incorporated with her kiln-formed work to produce one of a kind jewelry and glass sculpture. Another important artist included in the Holiday Show is Regina Partridge. Her paintings, drawing and prints have been collected and displayed in exhibits across New England for more than a decade, earning her numerous awards and recognitions. The exhibit will feature one-of-a-kind, original artworks from dozens of local, national, and international talents. Featured artwork will range in medium from painting, sculpture, and photography to hand blown glass, ceramics and assemblages. The work represents a marriage of compelling beauty and affordable, original artwork, making the art a unique gift idea this holiday season. The opening reception for the exhibition will be held at Gallery Z on Thursday, December 18th, from 5:00-9:00pm. Be sure to stop in to see the wonderful collection we have compiled and celebrate the holidays with us at Gallery Z. On the last Thursday of each month, Gallery Z hosts and evening of Food, Art & Wine from 5:30 – 8:00pm. Every month we partner with a different local restaurant and winery to provide a venue for enjoying world-class cuisine and wine in an environment surrounded by fine art. |
