The exhibition is being held to commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of teacher Aurel Peterson, the Chairperson of the Art Department at School One. Peterson’s personal philosophy for teaching art is help students become connected with art, which in turn helps them find their creative selves. “A few of our students will go to art school, but my hope is for all of our students to continue to shoot photos, sketch, and go to museums…that art becomes part of their lives,” says Peterson of her twenty-five years teaching at School One.
Upon graduating, many School One students attend visual art colleges and universities, such as Savannah College of Art and Design, Rhode Island School of Design, MassArt, Montserrat, Maine College of Art, School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Pratt, Parsons, Cooper Union, and California College of Arts. After completing their degrees, students find careers that incorporate their passion for art that was discovered at School One. Missy Lee Therien, class of 1985, is continuing her love of ceramics, currently residing in Florida where she works as a potter. School One graduate Elicia Castaldi, class of 1996, is the illustrator of the Putnam Press Children’s book, Miss Polly Had A Dolly, which combines Castaldi’s artwork with a centuries old rhyme. Castaldi has given the story what Penguin Books calls “an amazing new look.”
Since it’s opening in 2001, Gallery Z has successfully connected the public with the world of art. Director Bérge Ara Zobian continues to highlight the work of local, national, and international artists, giving them the opportunity to exhibit their pieces and communicate their messages through art. Consistent with their mission to give all artists the opportunity to share their work with the world, Gallery Z has generously volunteered to host the exhibition of School One's alumni artists.
Also on display at Gallery Z will be the Public Art Window, featuring ART Without Borders, a group supporting artists who actively promote artist’s rights both locally and internationally. ART without borders states that “through its commitment and interrogation, [art] is one of the most direct avenues for people to use to better understand each other, respect each other's values, and promote peace.” Members of ART Without Borders believe that artists are often the first to be persecuted because of their religious beliefs, political standpoints, ethnic backgrounds or artistic pursuits, and offer an organization that helps support the fight for rights around the world.

Show Dates: April 10 – May 12, 2007
Providence, RI (April 4, 2007): Gallery Z invites you to join us for the opening reception of “In the Aftermath,” an exhibition of artwork by Kevork Mourad, on Thursday, April 19, 2007 from 5-9pm. The show will be on display from April 10 through May 12, 2007. Artist Kevork Mourad will be present at the opening reception.
Kevork Mourad was born in Aleppo, Syria, where he lived until he was accepted to Yerevan Institute of Fine Art in Armenia, the place of his heritage. Kevork received his MFA in 1996 and moved to the United States in 1998. Since then, he has had his paintings displayed in countless exhibitions both nationally and internationally, including a solo show at the Armenian Library and Museum of America.
“In the Aftermath” is a powerful and potent series of paintings evoking the injustices and conflicts that have defined our society, particularly the Armenian Genocide of 1915 and the current war in Iraq. Upon first glance of Kevork’s work, the viewer becomes trapped in the swarm of emotion radiating from the canvas. There is undisputed depth to every aspect of Kevork’s paintings; each individual line and color is unique and crucial piece to the final image.
Early in his career, Kevork developed a technique of spontaneous painting, a type of performance art in which he shares the stage with musicians and allows the music take control of his brush. His first live painting performance was in 1997, and in 2005, Kevork joined the Silk Road Ensemble, a group founded by cellist Yo-Yo Ma that is “…dedicated to exploring the relationship between tradition and innovation in music.” Kevork has since performed Live Illustration to audiences across the globe.
Mourad will be performing "live illustration" at Sts. Sahag & Mesrob Armenian Church on Saturday, April 28th, 2007. The live illustration will feature the music of Gomidas (1869-1945), an Armenian composer and ethnomusicologist, performed by the “Brooklyn Rider String Quartet”, which includes Nicholas Cords, Jonathan Gandeisman, Colin Jacobsen, and Eric Jacobsen, four members of the Silk Road Ensemble. The performance will be presented in collaboration with the Armenian Historical Association of Rhode Island in honor of the late Corrine Heditsian, the former Chairperson of the Board of AHARI.

“Mother’s Day” By Helena Stockar
Opening Reception: Thursday, May 17, 2007, 5-9pm
Show Dates: May 15 – June 16, 2007
Providence, RI (April 4, 2007) Gallery Z invites you to join us for the opening reception of “Mother’s Day,” an exhibition of paintings by Helena Stockar. Artist Helena Stockar will be present for the event, which will take place on Thursday, May 17, 2007 from 5-9pm. The show will run through June 16, 2007.
Helena Stockar’s life tells us the story of a woman and her family who triumphed over hardship during a time of political instability in her country and became an artist who does not leave anyone untouched. In the late 1960’s, the USSR invaded Czechoslovakia, the homeland of artist Helena. Helena’s husband, Ivo, fled to America, but Helena and her two children were detained, unable to follow Ivo until 1968. Helena and her children left Czechoslovakia only one month before the borders were once again closed by Communist troops, finally settling in Rhode Island. She “paints with a passion rooted in traumatic times that she and her family lived through.” Helena’s beliefs and experiences are expressed through her artwork, but these experiences evolve from personal to universal in her paintings.
Helena never forgets her history when she creates her paintings, but her work is not only about her troubled past. As Helena’s life progresses into a less complex stages, so does her art. A theme “intertwined throughout her life’s artistic expression like golden threads” is motherhood. Her current collection incorporates nurturing images that reflect her role as a mother, created in honor of Mother’s Day, which falls on Sunday, May 13 this year.
Helena’s work has been included in dozens of exhibitions and permanent collections around the world, including the Czech Republic, Austria, France, Germany, Canada, England, Scotland, and the United States. “My art is my passion, my life’s work, not my hobby,” says Helena, who has created over one thousand oil paintings throughout the course of her life.

PROVIDENCE,RI—SEPTEMBER 18-OCTOBER 13--Armenian artists from across the globe come together for Gallery Z’s smash hit from September 18-October 13! (Opening Reception September 20, 5-9PM). You* can’t afford to miss it! Featuring a selection of images by the late Simon* Samsonian,* the Gallery* comes alive with exuberant color and youthful hopefulness. After returning from a 1915 Armenian playground, Samsonian discovered his parents massacred. Placed in a Greek orphanage with little to call his own, Samsonian adopted a modified cubist perspective, preferring to execute portraits of young, vital artisans in a muted secondary palate. Collectible painter Robert Elibekian (of the Elibekian family of artisans) crafts realistic-looking female figures in dramatic costumes. His palette reflects the sanguine reds and royal blues of his Georgian childhood cast against a modest flesh-toned background. His women are flowing, voluptuous, and free-spirited. Anet* Abnous’* vibrant platform of red and gold frees a woman’s spirit to dance amid her strongly executed graphic shapes. Her rendition of a nude is not “nude” at all, but rather a lifting of the veil with which women – all women — have been oppressed. She is not to be missed.

“Gallery Z Selections” An Exhibition Highlighting the Gallery Z Collection
Opening Reception: Thursday, November 15, 2007, 5-9pm
Show Dates: November 13 – December 18, 2007
Gallery Z announces the opening reception of “Gallery Z Selections,” an exhibition of new work from the 15 artists of Gallery Z’s diverse private collection, most of which have never been shown before. The opening will take place on Thursday, November 15 from 5-9pm, and the show will continue through December 18, 2007.
Gallery Z’s collection represents artists from around the globe, and includes 2D and 3D artwork - photography, sculpture, painting and etching. While the artists cover a wide array of talent and backgrounds, an example of one that will be featured is Mikhail Shemyakin. Shemyakin was born in 1943 in Moscow but raised in East Germany. He returned to Russia in 1957 to attend Academy of Arts at the Repin Art School in St. Petersburg but was ultimately expelled for his failure to conform to Socialist Realist ideologies. He developed his philosophy of Metaphysical Synthesism in 1967. This research was dedicated to the "creation of a new form of icon painting based on the study of religious art of all ages and peoples." In 1971, he moved to France where he gained popularity with his art. He moved to New York in 1981. He has since received five Honarary Doctorates and his work is featured in collections and museums all over the world.
Berge Zobian, the Gallery’s Founder, Owner and Director will share the curatorial work of this exhibition with Artist and Curatorial Assistant Julian Penrose. Born in Brazil, Penrose is a collage artist and sculptor creating work from a large library of collected and found materials. While the Exhibition Room will show the ‘selection’ from Zobian and Penrose, the Collection Room on the opposite side of the gallery will continue to show the rest of the artists that Gallery Z has represented over the years. Thursday, November 15 is the last official Gallery Night for the 2007 season. The program will resume in March 2008. Gallery Z will continue the tradition of 3rd Thursday receptions throughout the winter.
