Gallery Z is currently hosting an exhibition of “Prints and Multiples” through August 30, 2008. On Thursday, August 21, from 5-9pm, Gallery Z will have a series of lectures that are intended to educate and stimulate the public interest in the resurgence of printmaking in contemporary art. The event is free to the public and wine and hor dorves will be served.

On Thursday, August 21, from 5-9pm, Gallery Z will have a series of lectures taking place throughout the night. These lectures will explain the processes of the different printing techniques. The lectures will be given by Morgan Calderini and Agata Michalowska, both of whom are printmaking teachers at the AS220 Community Printshop.

After having received her BFA in Printmaking from Rhode Island School of Design in 2007, Calderini chose to redefine the hierarchical printshop archetype by establishing and managing Rhode Islands only community printshop with a grant from AmeriCorps VISTA. Combining an interest in preserving a dying craft and sustaining its place in society with a pure desire to provide affordable and accessible printmaking resources, Calderini has found a home at the AS220 Community Printshop.

Agata Michalowska is an artist and printmaker driven by technique and process.  She received her BFA in Printmaking from Rhode Island School of Design in 2007.  Michalowska is currently working in the AS220 Community Printshop as well as teaching workshops.

Performance artist Ximon Dunedain will be engaged in “Living Etching” performance in front of the gallery at intervals throughout the evening.

With substandard or misrepresented reproductions often surfacing on today’s art market, Gallery Z will provide examples of the various skilled processes that provide authentic prints. The show will serve as an exploration into the history of prints and multiples reflected against social, political, industrial or purely aesthetic contexts, spanning the larger history of art. This exhibition will showcase the numerous techniques used by printmakers that include limited edition prints, lithographs, woodcuts, etchings, engravings and serigraphs.
