"The Unknown Artists”
Opening Reception: Thursday, February 21st, 2008
Show Dates: January 29th, 2008 to March 15th, 2008
The term “Unknown Artists” is applied to describe a collection where identity and origin are less important then the artwork itself. The exhibition will include selections from artists who are unlisted or insufficiently documented as well as works bearing no signature. In examples where the artist is known, it is often the case that few or no records exist detailing the whereabouts of other pieces produced by the artist. The hours of research and scrutiny that are involved when identifying an artwork does not always prove to be fruitful, but the variety of artwork Gallery Z will feature highlights a number of artistic movements that defined 20th century art.
The subjective nature of art, whatever medium it may be, allows for the appreciation of quality and aesthetic beauty regardless of its obscurity. The ability of the viewer to form individual interpretations and relate to work in a unique way is the driving force behind this exhibition. The artwork Gallery Z has chosen to display bears strength of quality that lets the artwork stand on its own merit. The exhibition includes collectible works of all genres, from artists both living and non-living, spanning a time frame of approximately 100 years.
A specific artwork that exemplifies the theme of this show is an elegant, early 20th century landscape, by an unlisted Italian artist. The painterly strokes and subtle blending of cool tones employed in this autumn scene shows traces of an Impressionistic influence. Another selection included in the exhibit is an American genre scene that shows a mastery of the chiaroscuro technique and provides a unique narrative.
The Unknown Artists will run from January 29th, 2008 through March 15th, 2008. The Opening Reception will be held on Thursday, February 21st, 2008 from 5:00 to 9:00 pm, in continuing participation with Providence Gallery Night during the 2008 season.
