Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, in 1941, Robert Elibekian stands among three generations of Elibekian painters. He moved to Yerevan in 1956 and graduated from Yerevan’s Institute of Drama & Fine Arts in 1969. He has had many group exhibitions since then, in Armenia, Bulgaria, Poland, the United States, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, England, Canada, France, and Egypt, as well as solo exhibitions in Yerevan, Litvanya, Moscow, Beirut, and Paris. In addition, Elibekian has created numerous set designs and costumes for ballets, operas, films, and plays, such as “Traviata,” “Paiazio,” Gayané,” “Andouni,” and “Don Quixote,” and he has also worked as a designer and producer of a number of films at the "Armenfilm" studio. Robert Elibekian was one of the founders of the first Museum of Modern Art (Yerevan) in the USSR, and has been a member of the Armenian Artist's Union since 1970. In 1981, he received the State Prize of Armenia, and in 1992, he was honored with the Order of Merit of Armenia, the highest distinction of his country. He was also granted the Movses Khorenatsi Medal in the Field of National Culture in 2001. Robert Elibekian's works are part of collections at many museums including The National Gallery of Armenia, Modern Art Museum of Georgia, Museum of Oriental Arts in Moscow, Tretyakov Gallery of Moscow, National Gallery of Petersburg, and the Alex Manoogian Museum in Detroit, USA.
