Mathias Oppersdorff

'I have been a professional photographer since the mid-sixties and the Syracuse University Press has published three books of my photographic work: Adirondack Faces 1991, People of the Road – The Irish Travellers 1997, and Under the Spell of Arabia 2001.

I spent 18 years as a travel photographer for Gourmet Magazine, going to the best restaurants and a staying in the finest hotels. I described it as, “a great job, but somebody had to do it.”

Due to the onset of Parkinson’s I have retired to Matunuck in South County, Rhode Island. I am finished with my far-flung exotic travels, but when one door closes, another one opens; I have discovered the pinhole camera! A pinhole camera has no lens, no shutter, and no viewfinder – it’s a wooden box with a tiny hole where the lens would be. In contrast to the complicated professional equipment I used, I like the utter simplicity of the pinhole camera and the feeling of getting back to the origins of photography. As a bonus I find that the soft focus effect is very suitable for figure studies. This camera reaffirms my belief that photography is not dependent on costly technology, but the unique vision of the artist.'
