Kevork Mourad

Kevork Mourad, an artist of Armenian origin, was born in 1970 in Kamechli, Syria.  After his education in Syria, he was accepted to the Yerevan Institute of Fine Arts in Armenia, where he received his MFA in 1996.   In addition to showing his work at Gallery Z, Kevork has had his work exhibited in many places around Armenia and the United States, including the Tumanyan Museum in Yerevan, Armenia, the Gyumri Museum in Armenia (where six of his pieces are in permanent residency), the NYU Small Works Exhibit, the Sasoontsi Gallery in California, Gallery Evan in New York City, Grace Cathedral and the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, the Armenian Library and Museum of America in Watertown, Massachusetts, and the Rhode Island School of Design Museum.

Kevork’s works often explore themes of displacement, lost geographies, and refer to contemporary politics, especially of his native Middle East. Homesickness inspired him to create cityscapes reminiscent of the places he left (Syria, Armenia), while his love of the human form and the musicality of it is reflected in much of his work. Whether black and white or using a full palette of color, Kevork’s paintings retain their affinity for story-telling, for movement caught in stillness.  In looking at his works, one can see the illustrator laying his visual interpretations of music upon the canvas, as the melding of visual and aural landscapes has long been a centre-point of his work.  Indeed, Kevork has married visuals to music through performance collaborations (live visuals and animation) with many music groups, including the Brooklyn Rider.  He is also a member of the Silk Road Ensemble.
